Just a thought...

The best things in life are nearest:

Breath in your nostrils,

light in your eyes,

flowers at your feet,

duties at your hand,

the path of right just before you.

Then do not grasp at the stars,

but do life's plain, common work as it comes,

certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life.

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON

Music to My Ears

I found this on the Franklin Gun Shop website:

"There is no waiting period in Tennessee, but there is a background check..."

No waiting period. Man, that's beautiful!

Rant! (feel free to skip this one)

You just can't make this stuff up...

I received confirmation this morning that I am now the proud owner of a government issued Birth Certificate. Amazingly, I've lived in these here United States for 43 1/2 years and never needed one.

After moving to Tennessee and wanting to comply with the state laws requiring me to have a State issued Driver License, I called the not so local DMV office (there's not one in the county I live in) and asked what would be needed to acquire the license. In the list of needed "papers" was a Government issued Birth Certificate.

I then set about the task of securing this document... I contacted the County Clerk where I was born, sure no problem they said, they can get me one in 6 to 8 weeks. Well, actually there is a problem with that, I only get 30 days to get a Tennessee State license. So, I find a place online that can expedite the process. Great, just pay dearly for the service and they'll have me the document in 3 to 5 business days.

Did anyone notice?

The State of Tennessee does not trust the State of Illinois and it's record keeping. My Illinois state issued Driver license is not a trust worthy form of ID. However, I am able to secure an approved form of ID buy going online and purchasing one with a credit card. Online... with a credit card...

Apparently, the state of Tennessee trusts the Citibank Credit Card company more than the State of Illinois but that's a completely different blog post...

Commuter Critter Count

During our morning commute, the boys and I noticed we only pass a car or two on the way to Franklin. However, we see a tremendous amount of wildlife and have started to track the number of animals we see.

Listed below is an example. This is not an extraordinary day by any means.

Monday January 21st
19- deer (I'm sure there were more but it was getting quite dark on the way home)
6 - turkey (hens)
1 - coyotes (this guy was less than a half mile from our house first thing this morning)

These totals do not include all the road kill.  ;-)

WOW

Yesterday we had an issue with our... uh... you might say... plumbing. (something about the main sewer pipe not being connected to the main septic tank pipe) So I get a call from my dear bride about our "little" problem that led to me talking to Samuel Logan to see if he would be willing (and he was, he's a good son, thanks Samuel) to crawl under the house and see if he could fix the problem.

The next thing I know, Kim has taken the children to some friend's house and is headed back, with Samuel Logan, Jacob Allen and our friend's son, to work on the problem. At this point I decided to "go home for lunch" (we were trying to finish up a project on location, about 40 minutes from home) to see if I could help.

After arriving home I find that most all of the men folk from Heritage (the local ones anyway) are already on the job. They have the "mess" cleaned up... problem identified... agreed upon a solution... and have sent some to town for parts. So my dear bride offers me a sandwich at this point and I hungrily accept.

About the time I finish eating the men return from town with the much needed parts and start to work. Only they want to know why I'm home and reminded me that I am suppose to be at work and they think they can handle the situation just fine, thank you very much and we'll see ya later. So I jump back in the car and drive to Primm Springs to help finish up with the shoot.

A very big hearty, THANK YOU to the men and women of Heritage Church for all their help yesterday. And another big THANKS  to Ken for understanding our families needs.

Pictures?

If you are noticing a lack of pictures on our blog, it's because our digital camera is broken and we need to wait a little while till we buy another one. Sorry Riggenbachs...

Commute

So, I'm driving to work yesterday and a major portion of my drive is on the Natchez Trace Parkway. It is very scenic and there are very few cars that travel this road, which makes my commute a little more tolerable.

As I was approaching the Leipers Fork area I notice something crossing the road ahead. As I get closer it's movement reminds me of a cross between a Border Collie and a cat. I get closer... definitely a cat... closer still... ok, a big cat... oh, my! So, that's what a Bobcat looks like... I've only ever seen the tractor type, not the animal type.

Very cool...
